Listing Description

This raw and furnished space (divided into 2 floors) is situated in East Dorset-where the Battenkill River forms. With its spectacular mountainous backdrop-directly across the street from the Wilson House-this location is close by scenic VT RT 7A.

Our space has historic significance as the town’s first General store. The location is convenient to retail outlets, restaurants and outdoor venues (hiking trails, bicycle routes and fishing spots).

The space

This old house has been recently renovated and lies directly across the street from the renowned Wilson House. In our home you will find informative pictures (photos taken in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s) and documents (i.e. original blue prints store ledgers) that enlighten guests to the building’s notable past.

Adding to the charm and authenticity/history of the General Store ‐ which at one time had its own train stop ‐ there will be the occasional train (Vermont Rail) coming through town a few times day.

Other things to note:

We (Sandy and John) will greet you with a warm welcome upon arrival; provide you with a space overview, discuss the area and local events, furnish you with a key, local maps and applicable literature for your stay.

East Dorset is a charming, quiet and old fashioned town that lends itself to hiking, biking, fishing, skiing or to just plain relaxing. This pretty venue is sandwiched between the Taconic and Green Mountains and so offers impressive views.

The East Dorset General Store is just steps away from the house for snacks and supplies. Retail outlets, a variety of restaurants and serious theater are less than 10 minutes away. Bromley and Stratton resorts are in close proximity by just 20 and 30 minutes respectively from our location.

Guest access

Access to the space is provided via a separate entrance aside of garage.

Interaction with guests:

Host resides in adjacent building and so is generally available to attend to any matters.

Other things to consider:

Noteworthy venues include: Vermont Summer Festival Horse Show; the Southern VT Arts Center; Hildene (The Lincoln Family Home); numerous shopping outlets (Orvis, Vermont Country Store etc.) and excellent restaurants; Bromley and Stratton Mountain Ski Resorts. Also this municipality hosts the Dorset Theater Playhouse the Dorset Quarry (picnicking and swimming), and many historic inns. The venue also is easy access to acclaimed farmers markets including Dorset Manchester and Weston.

The local highways provide quick access to other ski venues in the area. Our location is a mere 1 1/4 hours from Albany or Saratoga.

Golfers will be pleased to note that there are numerous golf courses in the immediate area (i.e. Gleneagle Golf Course at the Equinox, Stratton Mountain Country Club and many private clubs).

Vermont also has a variety of food festivals and farmers markets. The Manchester farmers Market (on Thursdays) and the Dorset Market (on Sundays) are a fun experience with their abundance of fresh picked farm product and Vermont inspired cuisine. Oh – and be aware that berry/fruit picking season has commenced from a number of local farms – from Mad Tom Orchard and Wildwood Berry Farm in East Dorset to the Dutton Farm Stand in Manchester Center and so many others.

Last but not least:

Sandy is an accomplished chef of the former Pan Latin Café out of downtown Manhattan. Since moving to Vermont in 2014 Sandy has participated in the various farmers markets and formal caterings where she has emphasized locally sourced produce with Latin inspired cuisine to create her unique dishes. Sandy has a deep knowledge of local growers, restaurants, farmers and artisans and is of course open to creating her unique dishes for our guests. Sandy can create her unique dishes with 48 hours notice. She can prepare meal occasions long with picnic baskets box lunches, produce any and all meals and/or caterings for special events and cooking classes.

Sandy’s unique energy and passion translate to a memorable Vermont culinary experience.
